In January 2024, Gerald assumed the position of Discipline Lead for Sound at Australia's National Film School (AFTRS). With a Ph.D. from RMIT University, his research delved into sound, place, and locative art practice, contributing to a profound understanding of the concept of place through creative exploration.

Originally from Troon, Scotland, Gerald is known for his contributions to sound design and composition within contemporary dance, film, and the visual arts. Before joining AFTRS, he taught as a lecturer in Sound at Swinburne University, Melbourne, Australia, from 2011.

His creative endeavours encompass sound design and composition, including collaborations with the Australian contemporary dance company, Lucy Guerin Inc. Notably, he composed original soundtracks for internationally acclaimed productions such as 'Aether' (2006) and 'Structure and Sadness' (2007), earning a nomination for the Green Room award for best original composition.

Gerald’s innovative projects include commissioned audio walks for the City of Port Phillip, Melbourne, highlighting his commitment to immersive sonic experiences. His expertise also extends to electronic music, he recently released an EP under the alias Mairfield.

With a diverse portfolio, from sound design in TV documentaries to interactive soundscapes for leading visual artists, Geralds’ multidisciplinary expertise reflects his ongoing fascination with the power of sound to influence our lives.
